Naming Ceremonies

Welcome your new arrival with a ceremony full of love

Cream knitted baby blanket, tiny booties and daisies in warm sunlight

What a beautiful time it is when you welcome a whole new human into the world! You made that beautiful baby, and you need to celebrate! I will work with you to craft a personalised ceremony that conveys the love that you have for your new addition and the values that you will bring to this gorgeous child's life.

A naming ceremony can be held wherever you feel most at home — your garden, a village hall, a favourite hotel, a woodland clearing — and it can be as intimate or as full of family as you'd like. Older children, adopted children and step-families are all warmly welcomed; a naming ceremony is a wonderful way to mark a family coming together.

We can include guide parents, promises from grandparents, a candle or sand ritual, and a keepsake certificate signed by everyone there. It usually takes around thirty minutes — long enough to feel like a proper occasion, short enough for small people.

What a Naming Ceremony Can Include

How It Differs From a Christening

A naming ceremony carries no religious requirement and no church rules. There is nothing to sign and nothing to promise beyond what you genuinely mean. If faith matters to your family, we can include it — and if it doesn't, we simply won't.

Promises and Guide Parents

Parents, grandparents and siblings can all make promises. Instead of godparents you can appoint guide parents, mentors or supporting adults, chosen for the part you want them to play in your child's life.

Readings and Rituals

Candle lighting, sand blending, a wishing tree, a time capsule of letters to be opened at eighteen, a favourite poem or children's story read by a big brother or sister — we choose what fits your family.
